Baseball: Conquerors Upset 9A Mandarin

Bryan Muniz and Conner Aldrich had three hits apiece, and Muniz drove in three runs as the Conquerors defeated the Mustangs of Class 9A Mandarin High School 7-5 Monday night at home.

Muniz highlighted his big night with a two-run single in the bottom of the second that plated Ethan Dage and Denver Wood to make the score 3-0. Dage singled his way aboard, and Wood reached on an error that allowed Jared Donald (walk) to score the game's first run.

Trinity added two more runs before the inning came to an end. Dawson Fietsam lined one into right to drive home Muniz, and Dylan Simmons lofted a sacrifice fly that allowed Fietsam to score. Trinity led 5-0 at inning's end.

Mandarin, though, took advantage of miscues and opportunities in the top of the third and got four of those runs right back. A lead-off walk to Tyler Graves and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position with one out. Ty Jackson reached on an error that allowed Graves to score from second for the first run. Luke Dexterhouse then walked, and Johnny Rego laced a two-run triple to right center to score two and pull Mandarin to within two. Brennan Baker followed with a RBI single -- all this with one out.

Two more men reached following a pitching change to load the bases before C.J. Crawford got a popup and a fly ball to end the rally.

Bryce Janney (W: 3-1. 1.01 ERA) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief, and Justin Parrish notched his first save of the season by allowing one run in the final two innings combined.

The Conquerors added insurance runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Muniz drove in his third run with a base hit into left to score Wood (walk), and Kishon Frett's RBI double in the fourth plated Matt Crump (single) with Trinity's final tally.

Mandarin added a run in the sixth without the benefit of a hit, but Parrish then induced a bases-loaded 1-2-3 double play and a ground ball to get out of the inning with no further damage. Parrish then pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two, to close it out.

The Conquerors (13-7-1) play district opponent Duval Charter at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. A trip to Tallahassee's North Florida Christian follows on April 18 before the Conquerors play at Interlachen for a district game on April 23.
