After getting a fantastic pitching performance from Justin Parrish to defeat Episcopal in the 4A, District 2 title game, the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors got more of the same from Bryce Janney in the region semifinal as Trinity defeated Panama City’s North Bay Haven Academy 6-1 Tuesday night at Trinity.
Episcopal also won its semifinal in the Western Panhandle 5-1 over a very tough Pensacola Catholic team thanks to the outstanding mound presence of Kolby Mullaney.
These two semifinal winners set the stage for a rematch of last week’s district title game – this time in an elimination game and the right to advance to the state Final Four.
Janney (W: 3-1, 0.77 ERA) pitched a complete game for Trinity, allowing only an unearned run on seven hits while walking no one and striking out four. He threw 75% of his 83 pitches for strikes.
Trinity got some help from the North Bay defense as only one of the six runs came in via the RBI. Bryan Muniz’s ground ball error in the fifth scored Denver Wood to make the score 4-1. Wood scored three times, all on batted balls for an error, and Muniz scored once on a wild pitch and once on an error.
Dawson Fietsam stole home in the third after reaching on a base hit and advancing first-to-third on Conner Aldrich‘s single. Fietsam finished the night 2 for 4 with one run scored. Wood was 2 for 3 while Matt Crump and Jared Donald each had a single for the Conquerors.
Meanwhile, Episcopal got 3 RBI from Hunter Russell, who was 2 for 3 plus a sacrifice fly and a run scored vs. Pensacola Catholic. Conner McGarrity was also 2 for 3, drove in a run, and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Langston Hardy scored twice, and Cab McIver crossed the plate in the win as well.
Episcopal pounded out 11 hits overall.
Pitcher Kolby Mullaney (W: 4-3, 1.30) threw a complete game three-hitter in which he allowed only one unearned run. Mullaney walked no one and struck out nine, facing only 26 batters in seven innings.
Trinity won the district championship 5-1 over Episcopal on May 9, and Class 4A’s 15th-ranked Eagles (17-12) will look for vengeance over the #5 Conquerors (21-7). The region final will take place at Trinity beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17.
The winner will face #2 Delray Beach American Heritage (27-2) or #20 Oxbridge Academy (12-12). That game will also occur Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
