Baseball: Win, Lose, and Draw for Conquerors in Las Vegas

It was Win, Lose, and Draw for TCA Baseball in their venture out west as the Conquerors competed in the annual Bishop Gorman Invitational Desert Classic from April 3-6. Trinity brings home at least one of each mark as they fell 3-0 to The Vauxhall Academy of Baseball on Wednesday, stormed back to tie Liberty 5-5 on Thursday, walked it off for the win over Centennial on Friday, and came up a little short 14-11 in a dramatic comeback effort against Coranado on Saturday.

Wednesday: Vauxhall 3, Trinity 0

The Conquerors met up with one of Canada's finest in Vauxhall (Vauxhall, Alberta, Canada) as pitchers Levi Abbot and Chase Florendine held TCA to two hits, two walks, and no runs while combining for 10 strikeouts. Dawson Fietsam and Bryan Muniz managed hits, but Vauxhall scored single unearned runs in the bottom of the second and third, and Carlin Dick homered in the sixth.

Justin Parrish started for Trinity and allowed only two hits through five innings; both runs allowed were unearned due to fielding miscues. Parrish walked two and struck out one.

Thursday: Trinity 5, Liberty 5

Conner Aldrich drove in the game-tying runs to cap a five-run rally in the top of the seventh and pull the Conquerors even with Liberty (Henderson, NV). Aldrich's double plated Justin Simmons and Fietsam.

Trinity came to bat trailing 5-0. Simmons drove in Matt Crump, who singled to start the rally. After Ethan Dage walked and Jared Donald reached on an error to load the bases, Simmons got his RBI single, and Fietsam drew Ball 4 to bring in Dage. Muniz brought home Donald with a ground ball to make the score 5-3 with two outs, setting the stage for Aldrich, who tied the game with his double.

Crump pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, but the two-hour time limit ended the game at that point.

Seven different Conquerors hit safely, but Liberty got 2 RBI each from James Katona and Logan Meusy. Liberty got an unearned run in the bottom of the first, and Katona and Meusy each had two-run singles in the sixth to make the score 5-0.

Friday: Trinity 4, Centennial 3

The Conquerors scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Centennial (Las Vegas, NV) when third-baseman Zachary Hare mishandled a ground ball off Aldrich's bat with two outs. Muniz, who tripled one batter earlier, raced home with the walk-off run.

That run was the third that Muniz scored in the game; he also crossed the plate on Aldrich's two-run single in the first. Fietsam led off the game with a walk and advanced first-to-third on Muniz's double. Aldrich drove them both in.

Muniz scored his second run on a pick-off attempt that went astray. Pitcher Sam Simon tried to get Dylan Simmons at first, and Muniz broke from third on the play and put Trinity ahead 3-0.

Bryce Janney pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, but after his departure, Centennial rallied for three to tie the score. An RBI triple from Austin Kryszczuk and a two-run single from Trevor Wright forced the tie. Parrish then entered to get the final out and benefited as the winning pitcher when Muniz scored the game-winning run.

Saturday: Coranado 14, Trinity 11

A 12-run deficit did not dampen the Conquerors' spirits, and they nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback against Coranado (Henderson, NV). Trailing 12-0 entering the top of the fourth, the Conquerors scored two in the inning on Dylan Simmons's double and Dage's sacrifice fly. They rallied again for four in the fifth on Dage's bases-loaded hit-batsman, Crump's bases-loaded walk, and Donald's two-run double.

Coranado added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 14-4. The Conquerors, though, kept fighting -- even after a scoreless sixth inning.

Kishon Frett homered (4) to start the top of the seventh. After hits from Dage and Crump, Donald doubled to center to drive in Dage and make the score 14-8. Matt Luxenburg reached on an error to score Crump. Fietsam then singled home Donald, and Muniz drove in courtesy runner Denver Wood to make the score 14-11.

Aldrich would single next, but, unfortunately, Coranado's Noah Wasano got a pop-up and a fly ball double-play to end the rally and the game.

Overall, for the week, Bryan Muniz led the Conquerors with 6 hits in 13 at bats. He also scored three times and drive in two runs. Conner Aldrich drove in four runs on four hits while Ethan Dage scored three times himself.

Trinity also had 2 RBI each from Dawson Fietsam and Dage while Aldrich, Fietsam, Dylan Simmons, Jared Donald, Kishon Frett, and Matt Crump all scored twice. Denver Wood and Justin Simmons each scored a run, and Dylan Simmons, Justin Simmons, Frett, Crump, and Luxenberg all had RBI's.
