Three defensive touchdowns and two dynamic scoring plays of 90+ yards highlighted the night as the undefeated and top-seeded Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors won the opening round of the 2018 playoffs with a resounding 62-15 win over the #8 Suwannee High School Bulldogs in Friday’s Class 5A, Region 1 quarterfinal.
Stephen Williams II literally stole the show with two interceptions returned for touchdowns. The two Pick-6 plays totaled 104 yards. Williams grabbed his first interception at the Trinity 45 and scampered 55 yards untouched for the score with 8:53 left in the second quarter. Williams repeated the task later in the period, crossing the goal line just 1:14 before the halftime intermission after picking off his second pass and bringing it back 49 yards. Williams also recovered a fumble to help set up another scoring drive for the offense.
Sandwiched in between the two interceptions was the fumble that DL George Hawkins picked up at the Suwannee 32 and nearly walked into the end zone for his second touchdown of the season.
After Trinity’s defensive heroics, the Conquerors took a 62-7 lead into halftime. The defense scored three touchdowns, nearly as many as the high-powered offense tallied.
Fred Davis and Marcus Crowley each scored on plays of over 90 yards. Davis took the opening kickoff 95 yards for the touchdown to give Trinity an early 6-0 lead. He fielded the ball on the bounce, blasted his way through the coverage, and flew untouched until just a few yards shy of the end zone. He then shook off the one man who got hands on him and made it inside the pylon to give the Conquerors a 6-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game.
On Trinity’s first possession following a Suwanee punt that pinned the Conquerors back to their own 3-yard line, Crowley took a second-down run 97 yards untouched for the score. Crowley scored his second rushing touchdown on Trinity’s next possession, which followed a Suwannee fumble that gave Trinity 1st and 10 at the Bulldogs’ 12.
Jonathan Ealey also had a huge touchdown run when he plowed through the line and motored 73 yards with 2:25 left in the first half. Treyaun Webb preceded Ealey five minutes earlier with a five-yard scoring run that capped a three-play, 31-yard drive. Malik Myers also scored via a four-yard touchdown pass from Jacory Jordan.
Clayton Roerig converted eight of nine extra-point attempts and is 59 for 62 (95.2%) on the season.
Twenty-four Trinity defenders were in on tackles, and the defense forced six fumbles and two interceptions.
Suwannee scored on the first play of the second quarter when quarterback Tyree Taylor kept the ball himself for the fourth consecutive play and crossed the goal line from one yard out. The Bulldogs tallied the game’s final points on C.J. Hall’s two-yard touchdown run that capped an impressive 6-play, 50-yard drive. Hall then converted the two-point attempt.
The Conquerors advance to the regional semifinal, in which they will host the War Eagles of Wakulla High School (Crawfordville, FL). Wakulla, the region’s #5 seed, defeated #4 Ribault 17-8 on Ribault's turf in Round 1. Wakulla is the District 2 runner-up with an overall 9-2 record on the season and an average score of 32-14.
