Fred Davis took over at quarterback and led the Conquerors to victory by tossing three touchdown passes as part of his big night, and Trinity Christian Academy Football evened its record after six games with a big 42-7 win over Class 1A Top-Ten Pahokee High School.
Davis, playing in place of injured quarterback Jacory Jordan, completed 11 of 19 passes for 173 yards, three touchdowns, and a QB rating of 127.6. He connected with three different receivers for scores on passes of 21 yards to Marcus Burke with 38 seconds left in the second quarter, 25 yards to Jaylen Fowler at the 8:37 mark of the third quarter, and Fred Highsmith with 26 seconds on the clock at the end of the third.
Davis also rushed for 28 yards and two first downs on four carries.
For Highsmith, a sophomore receiver, it was his first touchdown as a varsity Conqueror, and his score – along with the extra point from Caleb Stevenson – gave the Conquerors a running clock for the second consecutive game. Highsmith had two catches on the night for a total of 65 yards. Fowler and Burke each caught three passes for 47 and 59 yards, respectively.
Clayton Roerig kick the first five extra points for the Conquerors, and Roerig is perfect in 27 extra-point attempts through six games in 2019.
On the ground, Kyjuan Herndon surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark with 220 yards on 8 carries for an average of 27.5 yards per carry. Herndon scored Trinity’s first touchdown on a 38-yard run with 2:08 left in the first quarter. His rushing total of 1,132 yards are 20th in the nation and #2 in the state of Florida according to MaxPreps as of Sunday's update, and his 1,222 all-purpose yards lead the Jacksonville area.
Sandwiched in between Herndon’s and Burke’s touchdowns were scoring rushes by Pedro Velez and Kobe Brown. Each fullback's touchdown run was from two yards out in the latter portion of the second quarter.
Defensively, Miles Brooks and Sabion Wade made things tough on the Pahokee offense by compiling six tackles each. Caden Morrell had five tackles and forced a fumble that Isaiah Thomas recovered for the takeaway in the fourth quarter. In addition, Terrell Jackson intercepted a pass late in the first quarter.
Jackson, Latrell Wade, and Harold Stubbs each had four tackles, and 16 more defenders were all in on tackles with 10 of them doing so multiple times. Jakhari Smothers had 2.5 of the defense’s 5 total sacks on the night. Morrell (1) Wade (0.5), Simmeon Davis (0.5), and Tristan Herndon (0.5) were also part of the Conquerors’ sack attack.
Pahokee scored 56 seconds before halftime on backup quarterback Jermaine Roberson’s 35-yard touchdown run on a fake handoff and quarterback keeper. Overall, Roberson, who took over when starter Keyonvis Bouie left with a mild injury, rushed seven times for 73 yards, three first downs, and a touchdown. Bouie returned late in the fourth quarter. The quarterback duo combined for an 8-for-18, 85-yard passing performance.
The Conquerors (3-3) will next travel to Downtown Miami to battle Class 4A’s #1 team, the Booker T. Washington Tornadoes, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, October 3. The Tornadoes (4-2) fell 52-14 to the IMG Academy on Friday night. Trinity will then visit Georgia’s #3 team -- and the nation’s #29 team – the Colquitt County Packers (4-1) for an 8:00 p.m. affair on Friday, October 11.
The Senior Night/Homecoming game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, against Robert E. Lee (4-2), and the regular season ends at Raines (3-2) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25.
