After a terrific 13-1 season in 2018, the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors are ready to make even more noise in the coming 2019 season. The Conquerors will play a brutal schedule, and that plethora of tough competition began Thursday night when the new, younger Conquerors faced the Purple Hurricanes of Class 6A Gainesville High School in the annual spring game. The teams traded touchdowns in the game's final two minutes, and Gainesville came out on top 17-13.
Gainesville quarterback Rod Williams rushed in from nine yards out with 19 seconds left to play to give the Hurricanes the lead. Alex Hood converted his second extra point of the night to make the score 17-13, meaning the Conquerors would have to go 75 yards from scrimmage without a time out to pull out the win. Williams led the Hurricanes down the field from their own 25 and eventually hit receiver Alex Brown to give Gainesville a first down at the Trinity 15 before finishing the drive with his own touchdown run.
Trinity rising sophomore Daniel Plummer hit rising freshman Treayuan Webb, and Webb reached midfield with six seconds left. Webb then rushed to the right side but was brought down near the 40 as time expired.
The Conquerors took a 13-10 lead on the previous possession when Fernando Porter completed a 75-yard scoring drive with a 10-yard touchdown run in which he scampered sideline-to-sideline to evade Hurricane defenders. Webb garnered the bulk of the yards on the drive before Porter raced in with 1:34 remaining in the game.
After a scoreless first quarter, Gainesville got a 24-yard field goal from Hood to take a 3-0 lead at the 9:38 mark of the second quarter. The Conquerors answered soon afterward when rising junior starting quarterback Jacory Jordan hit rising senior and Clemson commit Fred Davis at the 50; the speedy Davis broke away untouched for a 77-yard touchdown reception with 5:23 left in the half. The extra point failed, and the Conquerors took a 6-3 lead into halftime.
A scoreless third quarter ensued, and the score remained 6-3 until Jenkins took over for the Hurricanes. His 29-yard run set up Gainesville with 1st and 10 at the Trinity 5. After an offisides penalty, Jenkins rushed in for a three-yard touchdown (Hood extra point) to put the Hurricanes ahead 10-6.
When the new season begins, the Conquerors will play an exhibition game at home against Jacksonville's Terry Parker High School on Friday, August 23. The regular season begins with a trip to Lake City to face the rivaled 7A Columbia High School Tigers on Friday, August 23. Another road game at Tallahasse's Godby High School follows a week later, and the first home game is against Jacksonville's Ribault High School on Friday, September 6.
