JV: Conquerors 22, Ed White 21
Tomarion McCray led all scorers with 10 points as the junior varsity Conquerors held off the Commanders of Ed White High School in the fourth quarter and came away with a one-point win. McCray scored six points in the first half and four more in the third quarter before the defense held Ed White to two fourth-quarter points.
Jacqari Sineus followed McCray with 7 points with six of them in the first half. Sineus also played a key role on the defensive side of the court and pulled in clutch rebounds, especially in the fourth quarter, to keep the opposition from getting off second-chance shots. R.J. Albury contributed four points, and Khori Jones's lone point at the line became the margin of victory.
The score remained close the entire game with the biggest lead for either team reaching three points. The teams traded baskets and leads all through the first three quarters. Ed White led 6-5 after one and 13-12 at the half. Trinity outscored the Commanders 10-6 in the third, and Ed White's Korey Huff scored the fourth quarter's only basket. Huff finished with four points.
The Commanders had one last chance to win with 2.7 seconds left. The inbound pass went directly under the basket, but Sineus knocked the ball away. Ed White recovered the ball and got off the shot at the buzzer, but it came up short.
Ed White's Jeron Gordon led his team with eight points, and five teammates put points on the board for the Commanders, including Alphonson Neal and Darius Oglesby, who each sank a three-pointer.
Varsity: Ed White 56, Conquerors 45
Miles Brooks led the Conquerors with a dozen points and drew several Ed White charges to help give his team a strong chance to win. Brooks was clutch at the line in the second half, converting 5 of 7 attempts in the final two periods and 8 of 12 overall. Travis King followed with nine, and Xavier Cobb scored eight, including all four free-throw attempts.
Donavon Paris contributed six points while Dylan Seikbert and Colton Warren each had a three-pointer and Evan Wilson and George Hawkins had two points apiece.
Overall, the Conquerors shot 62% (18 for 29) from the line compared with Ed White's 68% (17 for 25).
The game remained close most of the way before the Commanders began to pull away near the end of the third quarter. After winning the first quarter 14-13, Ed White went on a 5-1 run at the end of the second to put up a 29-22 lead at the half. The Commanders led 42-36 after three and outscored Trinity by three in the final period.
Ed White's Kenneth Young sank a pair of threes in the second half to help propel him to the game-high total of 15 points. Teammate Aaron Alexander followed with 10, including 6 in the third period, and Mike Francois scored with 9. Veatrice Milton contributed 8 while Michael Jackson scored 7, Zebreke Bellamy finished with 6, and Adrian Alexander had 1.
The Conquerors have three more JV/Varsity double-headers this week. On Tuesday, the gentlemen will travel to Mandarin to face Christ's Church Academy before returning to the home court on Thursday to host Cornerstone Christian. On Friday, Trinity plays at Englewood. The action begins at 5:30 p.m. each night.
Trinity will then close the season with two away games and three home games between January 27 and February 7.
