After defeating Clay in the opening round Thursday, TCA Softball took on Class 8A 2018 state runner-up Oakleaf in the semifinal of the 2019 Tournament of Champions at Oakleaf High School Friday night. Oakleaf scored immediately, and as Trinity pulled close midway through, the powerful Knights added more offense late and won 11-3.
Trailing 4-0 as they came to bat in the top of the fourth, the Conquerors got lead-off hits from Bailey Cooley and Morgan McMillian. A sacrifice bunt from Breezy Burnette moved the runners to second and third. Alexis Ross then beat out a chopper in front of the plate to load the bases, and a fielder's choice cut down a runner at the plate.
With two outs, Mackenzie Marrell drove in both McMillian and Ross with a base hit to cut the deficit in half. Oakleaf's Madi Davis, though, got out of the jam with only the two runs scoring. Trinity would not score again until two outs in the seventh when Burnett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Marrel was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI on the night while Ross, Regan Griffis, and Linzie LaFavor had two hits each and Cooley and McMillian also hit safely for the Conquerors.
Davis (W) pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits while walking three and striking out three. The Conquerors had base runners every inning and multiple base runners five times, but Davis got out of the threats without allowing a run in five of those seven instances. Cooley (L: 7-3, 2.56 ERA) took the loss for the Conquerors.
Oakleaf's Jaeda McFarland led off the game with a solo home run, and she added a two-run shot in the fifth to cap a four-run rally that put her team ahead 8-2. McFarland's final line reads 2-3, BB, 2 HR, 2 R, and 3 RBI. Judrianna Serrano had a two-run double in the third, and by inning's end, the Knights had a 4-0 lead. Oakleaf added three more in the bottom of the sixth on RBI's from Baylee Goddard (double), Aspen Windsheim (single), and Caitlyn Lumug (groundout).
Trinity will play Lake Wales High School at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the tournament's third-place game. Saturday's game will stream live on Facebook: TCA Conquerors Athletics. Oakleaf advances to the tournament title game against Gainesville High School Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
