Varsity Baseball: Conquerors Fall Short in Season Opener vs. Providence

TCA Conquerors Baseball opened the 2020 regular season at home against one their biggest rivals of all, the Stallions from the Providence School of Jacksonville. The game was originally scheduled for February 21 at Providence, but due to inclement weather, the teams moved across town to play at Trinity Baseball Complex. Providence scored two in the fifth and came away with the 2-0 win.

Bryce Janney started for the Conquerors and pitched two scoreless innings. Janney allowed four hits and a walk while striking out two. The Conquerors' bullpen of Noah Couch, Drew Sullivan, Raylan Wagner, and C.J. Crawford then combined for five innings of two-run ball on seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Sullivan (L: 0-1, 4.20 ERA) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched. He walked one.

Denver Wood broke up Providence's bid for a combined no-hitter with a smash up the middle for Trinity's only hit. Wood then stole second but could not advance any further. Starter Shawn Evans threw four scoreless, hitless innings during which he walked one and struck out five. Casey Hagan (W: 1-0, 0.00) allowed one hit in three innings in relief while striking out eight of the ten batters he faced.

Sam Gonzalez (single, GWRBI) and Max Taylor (ground ball) drove in the two runs for the Stallions in the top of the fifth.
