The Conquerors took advantage of miscues and extra outs in a big five-run fourth, and four pitchers combined for a shutout as TCA Varsity Baseball defeated the Braves of Terry Parker High School 6-0 Tuesday evening on the Southside.
Three runs scored on a single from Justin Simmons that got past the Braves center fielder. Garrett Sigley, the pinch runner for Logan Etheridge, and Noah Couch scored from second and first, respectively, while Simmons raced all the way around the base paths to make the score 3-0. Etheridge and Couch both singled to open the inning.
The top of the fourth continued with Alonzo Austin taking a hit-by-pitch with two outs, and he promptly advanced on a wild pitch. Sebastian Moore's ground ball caused another miscue that allowed Austin to come in with the fourth run. Courtesy runner Jerome Jordan advanced into scoring position on Ashton Nugent's walk, and C.J. Crawford drove in Jordan with the fifth run of the inning.
The Conquerors added another run in the fifth when Eric Fouraker (hit by pitch) scampered home on a wild pitch.
Crawford (two singles) and Couch (single, double) each had two hits for the Conquerors, and Austin also had a base hit early in the game.
Raylan Wagner (W: 1-1, 3.50 ERA) earned the win in relief with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, during which he allowed only two hits while striking out three. Drew Sullivan started and worked the first 2 1/3 innings on only two hits. Seniors Denver Wood and Kanyan James each pitched one inning to close it out and struck out all three men faced. No Trinity pitcher issued a free pass.
The Conquerors (3-4) will next face Ridgeview High School in Orange Park at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12. TCA will then travel to Tallahassee on Friday to battle the powerful Eagles of North Florida Christian School at 4:00 p.m. before returning home on March 19 to host Spruce Creek High School (Port Orange) as the 2020 Tournament of Champions commences.
