Senior Kanyan James (#42) pitched a masterful complete-game shutout in what we hope will not become his final high-school start as the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors blanked perennial state contenders in the Class 2A Eagles of North Florida Christian School Friday night in our state capital. Trinity also got 2 RBI each from a pair of Conquerors in winning 6-0.
James (W: 1-0, 2.92 ERA) pitched all seven innings, allowing only four hits and no runs on 87 pitches. He walked only two of the 26 batters he faced and struck out seven. His only hint of trouble came in the bottom of the second when NFC loaded the bases on three singles, two of them with two outs. James, though, struck out the next man to end the threat.
James had perfect 1-2-3 innings in the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth frames and allowed only one base runner in the third and seventh. He induced a line-drive double play to help himself in the third and ended the game with a strikeout and a ground ball to complete the masterpiece.
C.J. Crawford and Raylan Wagner each drove in two runs. Crawford took a base-loaded walk in the top of the third to put the Conquerors on the board and doubled home Ashton Nugent (who doubled to lead off) to make it 4-0 in the seventh. Wagner had separate RBI singles in the fifth and seventh, driving in Nugent (single, 3-0) and Crawford (double, 5-0), respectively.
Trinity's other two runs came on Anthony Bucci's sacrifice fly to score Justin Simmons (double) to make it 2-0 in the fourth and Simmons's double that brought in Wagner (single) in the seventh for the final tally.
The Conquerors are 4-5 as the season halts and look to resume play as soon as possible. If no more games occur, though, James will have ended his high-school career with a stellar performance.
