Miles Brooks and Fred Highsmith took turns lighting up the court as the Varsity Conquerors earned a resounding win over Yulee High School Thursday night on the home court. Trinity had a red-hot start, and after Brooks put his team ahead 6-5 early, the Conquerors never relinquished their lead on route to a 66-44 victory.
Brooks scored 11 of his game-high 15 points in the first quarter. He ignited the crowd with power drives to the lane and spin moves for the score throughout the first eight minutes. He added four more in the third quarter. Brooks also drew three charges to earn the takeaways for his team.
Highsmith's turn came in the second quarter. The sophomore played his best basketball of the season by draining all 13 of his points in these eight minutes. Highsmith used two free throws, a three-pointer, and four deuces to score 13 of Trinity's 20 second-quarter points.
Trinity's Xavier Cobb drove the lane several times to put up the bulk of his 12 points while Travis King scored 7, Colton Warren hit a pair of threes for 6, Dylan Seikbert totaled five (including a buzzer-beating three as the game ended), Donavon Paris sank 4 free throws, and George Hawkins and Evan Wilson each added 2.
The Conquerors won all four quarters, outscoring Yulee 18-13 in the first, 20-14 in the second, 13-9 in the third, and 14-8 in the fourth.
Yulee's Kobe Preister and Zack Drowdy each led the Hornets with 9 points while Trey Davis followed with 8 and Marcell White totaled 6. Jordan Garland, Jarod Baker, and Jacob Cartrette each scored 3.
The Conquerors will next play Monday night when both the JV and the varsity squads host the Commanders of Ed White High School. The double-header begins with the JV game at 5:30 p.m. Trinity will then host Cornerstone Christian School on Thursday, January 23, and travel to Englewood High School on Friday, January 24.
