Donavon Paris led the team with 15 points as the Trinity Christian Academy Conquerors opened the 2019-2020 regular season at home Monday night against the Knights from Creekside High School. Six more Conquerors contributed points, but a very strong showing from one man on the opposing team helped the Knights to a 46-40 victory.
Paris spread his points through the even-numbered quarters, scoring 7 in the second and 8 in the fourth. His pair of threes helped cut a 10-point deficit at the start of the fourth down to one until Creekside got four consecutive free throws from Ergys Muhametaj, who finished the night as the leading scorer with 22 points. Paris also hit a three in the second quarter to keep the game close as the teams went into the halftime intermission with Creekside leading 18-14.
Muhametaj started the night with two three-pointers that accounted for all the Knights' points in the first quarter. However, their very stingy defense held Trinity to just four free throws in the period. Creekside built a 12-4 lead early in the second, and the Conquerors outscored the Knights the rest of the way.
Travis King totaled 8 points on two threes and a deuce. His third- quarter shooting was all Trinity would score in the period, but the Conquerors got 20 in the fourth. Creekside, however, converted 11 of 16 foul shots in the fourth to help stave off Trinity's comeback effort. The Knights were 16 for 20 overall from the line. Trinity was 11 for 17.
Miles Brooks contributed six points for the Conquerors while Fred Highsmith had four, Colton Warren hit a three-pointer, and Evan Wilson and Xavier Cobb each had two. Creekside's Caleb Lyles hit four of those fourth-quarter free throws and added a three for a total of seven. Ethan Miller (6) and Jayden Westercamp (5) also helped lead the Knights.
On Tuesday, the Conquerors will visit Bishop Kenny High School for a JV/Varsity double-header that begins at 5:30 p.m. Trinity then plays at Ridgeview High School on Friday, November 29. The next home game is at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. on December 2 when both teams play host to the Mustangs of Mandarin High School.
