Miles Brooks's scoop and score late in the first quarter set the tone, and Trinity Christian Academy's high-powered offense took over from there as the Conquerors won their 2019 preseason match-up with former district opponent Terry Parker 44-6 Friday night on the home turf.
With no score and the Braves rushing on 3rd and 2 at the Conquerors 7, Trinity's Sabion Wade forced a fumble when Parker's Jujuan Turner reached the 5. Brooks grabbed the ball off its high bounce and scurried 95 yards nearly untouched for the game's first score at the 1:10 mark of the first quarter.
After an uneventful first possession from each team's offense that saw the two opponents trade punts, Parker quarterback Quail Brunson and running backs Turner and Artis Mattox moved the ball effectively from the Braves' 31 to the Conquerors' 7 before Wade made the big hit that led to the scoop and score. Trinity's defense would allow Parker to cross the first-down marker only four more times the rest of the night.
Senior Kyjuan Herndon scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter for the Conquerors. Herndon rushed into the end zone from the Parker 15 with 10:52 left in the second and from 16 yards out less than two minutes later as Trinity took a 21-6 lead into the halftime intermission. Herndon finished with 32 yards and 2 touchdowns on three carries before giving way to the younger Conquerors in the second half.
Those younger running backs proved their worth. Freshman Treyaun Webb had a seven-yard touchdown run in the third quarter as part of his 9-carry, 80-yard night. Junior Fernando Porter rushed for 52 yards and a 16-yard third-quarter score on six carries, and sophomore Xander Ross scored the game's final touchdown from 10 yards out with 6:18 left to play. Ross's score forced a running clock.
Trinity's defense notched a safety late in the third when Wyatt Pennybaker and George Hawkins chased down a Parker rusher in the end zone. That safety made the score 30-6.
Clayton Roerig converted all three extra-point attempts, and Caleb Stevenson was also 3 for 3.
Terry Parker scored on a nifty 10-yard run from Turner, who broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and forged into the end zone untouched afterward. Turner's big play came on first down after Tyrone Williams intercepted a pass at the Parker 37 and returned it to the Trinity 10. Tabari Rollins picked off two passes of his own for the Braves.
C.J. Ross led 27 different Conquerors who made tackles with nine (five solo). Caden Morrell had five tackles (four solo), and four teammates had four tackles each. The defense sacked the quarterback seven times overall.
The regular season begins on Friday, August 23, when the Conquerors travel to Class 6A Columbia High School in Lake City. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST. Trinity will then travel to Tallahassee to take on 5A powerhouse Godby on Thursday, August 29. The first home game will follow on September 6 versus Jacksonville's Ribault High School.
