Two big boppers bopped home runs as TCA Conquerors Softball finished the Montevedre Tournament in Orlando with a pair of games against two of the best in Florida.
First, Trinity defeated Class 6A South Lake 11-1 thanks in large part to Breezy Burnette's 4-RBI outburst that included a home run.
Then, the Conquerors battled one of their biggest rivals of all, the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Junior UNCC commit Mackenzie Marrell hit her second homer of the season and drove in three, but Episcopal outslugged the Conquerors and won it 10-5.
Conquerors 11, South Lake 1
Burnett's home run (1) was a two-run shot that scored Ragan Griffis (bunt single) ahead of her and put the game out of reach at 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Burnett also had a two-run double in the second to make the score 5-0.
Trinity started the scoring right away with Marrell's RBI single to plate Griffis (walk) in the first and added another when Morgan McMillian brought in Alexis Ross (walk) with a ground ball. Carolyn Lasater drove in Marrell with a base hit to cap a three-run opening frame.
Trinity added three more in the second thanks to Ross' sacrifice fly that followed Burnett's double. A single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth completed the big offensive output that saw the Conquerors finish with 11 runs, 11 hits, and 10 RBI in the game.
Lasater pitched a complete-game two-hitter, allowing only one earned run for the win. Lasater walked four and struck out four.
Episcopal 10, Conquerors 5
Marrell went deep over the center-field fence for a three-run shot (2) in the top of the third. Ryan Aspinwall and Burnett both singled to reach base and came in on the blast to give the Conquerors a 3-1 lead after ESJ's Grace Jones drove in the first run of the game with a ground ball.
Episcopal, though, came right back with three in the bottom half on RBI hits from Jones (double) and Maddie Latta (single). Soon after, Latta scored the go-ahead run on a error, and Episcopal never relinquished the lead.
The Eagles continued to hit and score with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. Latta finished the game with a home run and 5 RBI of her own, and Jones drove in two.
Marrell was 4 for 4 in the game, adding a double and two singles to her blast. McMillian had a run-scoring single in the seventh, but Latta did not allow any further scoring although the Conquerors pounded out 5 runs and 12 hits off the Eagles' pitcher.
The Conquerors will visit Suwannee High School (Live Oak) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10. A home game with Ponte Vedra follows on March 13 at 7:00 p.m. before Trinity visits Atlantic Coast High School on March 19.
The big match-up with Providence is at 7:00 p.m. at Trinity on March 20. The Conquerors defeated the Stallions 11-1 in preseason action.
