Alexis Ross put the Conquerors ahead in the fourth, and a big fifth inning sealed the win as two TCA seniors had big nights and Trinity Christian Softball defeated perennial Class 5A state contender West Nassau High School 8-1 on Senior Night Monday evening.
With her team trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Ross came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. She lined a single into center field that scored Lindsey Smith with the tying run and Morgan McMillian with the official game-winning run. Smith had singled her way aboard, and McMillian had walked. Senior Bailey Cooley then walked to load the bases, and Ross delivered in the clutch.
Trinity, though, was not through scoring. One inning later, Mackenzie Marrell added some insurance with a base hit that brought home Amaya Ross (walk, stolen base), and the Conquerors poured it on from there with a big two-out rally. Cooley drove home two with a base hit, Regan Griffis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Amaya Ross finished the rally with a two-run single to put up the game's final tally.
Overall, Alexis Ross was 2 for 3 with a run scored and a pair of runs driven in. Amaya Ross and Cooley each drove in two as well while Marrell was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and Griffis had 1 RBI for the Conquerors.
West Nassau scored first with a RBI single from M. Moore, one of six hits the Indians had overall.
Cooley (W: 5-1, 2.28 ERA) pitched a compete game, allowing one earned run on six hits. She walked only one batter while striking out 11 to complete her big Senior-Night performance.
The Conquerors, having played their final regular-season home game, will travel for the remainder of the season. The first stop is at Ponte Vedra High School on Tuesday with a first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. After time off for Spring Break, the team will visit 5A Baker County High School at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19. The Baker game will stream on Facebook: TCA Conquerors Athletics. Road games at Baldwin and Bishop Snyder will finish off the month on March 25 and 29, respectively.
After five more road games between April 2 and 20, Trinity will host the Class 4A, District 2 tournament beginning on April 29.
