An error in the fourth inning allowed the first of six unanswered runs to score, and Carolyn Laster finished what she started as TCA Conquerors Softball defeated Class 5A Ponte Vedra High School 9-3 Friday night in one of the few games allowed to play.
A line drive off the bat of Rylee Aspinwall -- which would have ended the inning -- fell into and out of the glove of the Sharks' center fielder and allowed Tatiana Brathwaite to score the go-ahead run and give TCA a 4-3 lead. Brathwaite was the courtesy runner for catcher Natalia Burnsed, who singled her way aboard with one out. Brathwaite advanced to second on Lexi Crews's ground ball before Aspinwall came to the plate.
Ponte Vedra jumped out to quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kate Mikle's RBI single drove in Scottland David, who singled to start the inning with a base hit and advanced on Maggie Richardson's sacrifice bunt.
The Sharks later came back from trailing 3-1 with two runs in the top of the fourth. Olivia Zitiello doubled in a run, and David tied it with a base hit two batters later.
That rally followed Trinity's two-run third to take the lead. Ragan Griffis laid down a sacrifice bunt with Breezy Burnett on second. With both the catcher and the third baseman vacating their positions to field the bunt, Burnett raced all the way from second to score the go-ahead run and give Griffis the RBI. Mackenzie Marrell followed with a tape-measure home run (2) to the opposite field to make the score 3-1.
The Conquerors added five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Marrell's RBI ground ball and Laster's run-scoring fielder's choice accounted for the two-run fifth. Burnett then pulled off a steal of home on the throw back to the pitcher in the sixth, and Trinity added two more when Griffis scored on a wild pitch and Morgan McMillin drove in Amaya Ross (walk) with the final tally.
Laster pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits. She walked three and struck out three.
Breezy Burnett: 3-4, 3B, 2 R
Amaya Ross: 1-2, 3B, 2 BB, 2 R
Mackenzie Marrell: HR, 2 RBI
Natalia Burnsed: 2-2, BB, RBI; Tatiana Brathwaite R
The Conquerors (4-3) will await word on if/when they will play again. They have 16 games remaining on their schedule plus the postseason.
