Trinity Christian Academy Volleyball hosted one its its biggest rivals when the Stallions from The Providence School of Jacksonville came to the Westside for a district battle and an IMSC match on Thursday. Trinity took 2 of 3 matches from the Stallions, including a varsity match that will have fans talking about two of the Jacksonville-area's best for quite some time.
VARSITY -- TCA Wins in Five: 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12
In a match that few -- if any -- can top, the district rivals performed the very definition of a seesaw battle. The teams traded wins, and each set saw numerous lead changes. The match as a whole contained multiple big leads; big comebacks; long, hard-fought volleys; defense; dives; digs; blocks; and kills.
In Set 1, the Conquerors built a lead and went on a late run that gave them the seven-point win. In set 2, neither team led by more than three until Providence scored its 24th point and then won by five. Trinity won the third set 25-23, but had to hold off Providence's comeback effort in attempt to erase a six-point deficit to pull to 23-24 before the Conquerors finished it off.
The Conquerors nearly pulled off a comeback win after trailing 22-14 and pulled to with a point of tying the set. Providence, though, stopped that comeback effort to make the score 23-21 and scored two more for the win and sent the match to a decisive 15-point Set #5.
The Stallions jumped out to a 7-4 lead before the Conquerors stormed back to hit double-digits first. Trinity then got within one point of victory, but the Stallions scored three straight points to make the score 14-12. The Conquerors finished the match when Anna Grace Combs set up Alli Carter with the kill for match point.
The Conquerors are now 1-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in district play.
Junior Varsity -- Providence Wins in Straight Sets: 25-21, 25-19
In the JV game, Providence led 23-12 in Set 1 before the Conquerors, led by Delany Dickason serving, scored eight consecutive points to pull to within three. The two teams then traded points, and after gaining a three-point lead and reaching set point, Providence got the kill to end the game 25-21.
Game 2 saw Trinity jump out to a 9-4 lead before Providence came back to tie it up. The game remained very tight with Providence eventually going ahead 17-15 and 19-16. Trinity forced a 19-19 tie, but the Stallions then finished with six straight points and won it on an ace from Avery Adcock to finish the match 2-0.
IMSC -- Conquerors Win in Two: 25-18, 25-23
The Middle School Conquerors played a tough battle with Providence in the season opener in the Independent Middle School Conference. Both sets stayed very close for the duration as the teams traded leads all afternoon. Trinity, though, put up an extended run at the end of the first set and held off a Providence comeback effort in the second to finish the match on straight sets.
The next games feature the junior varsity hosting First Baptist Academy at 630 p.m. on Monday, August 26. The varsity will next play at Harvest Community School on Thursday, August 29.
